Viatel Technology Group Publishes Ireland’s First SD-WAN Report
When Viatel started knocking on the doors of Irish businesses with their SD-WAN offering five years ago, they met a lot of blank stares. “We heard more than a few ‘SD-Wha’s?’ in those early days,” laughs Eilish O’Connor, Chief Technical Officer (CTO) with the group. Nevertheless, Viatel persisted, and that perseverance has paid off. Now broadly accepted as the de facto network of choice by the enterprise community, SD-WAN growth is predicted to grow by 48% between 2020-2027. Other surveys reveal ‘most’ ICT professionals had deployed or plan to deploy a software defined wide area network by 2024.
SD-WAN or software-defined wide area network is a type of virtual network architecture that employs software to manage the network communication. Its popularity derives, in part, from the fact that its deign is far better suited to how businesses now use the internet. Eilish explains “With companies running their workloads to the cloud, traditional network configuration causes performance issues and terrible user experience. SD-WAN is a cost-effective way to transform traffic capacity among many other advantages.”
Being first to the Irish market with a fully managed service means Viatel now has a well-established SD-WAN estate. Damien McCann, Director of Sales and Marketing with the technology group, expands “Persuading the early adopters to come on board means we now have well over 300 networks delivered, approaching 1,000 devices configured and an incredible 50,000 hours of support provided around the clock by fully certified technical staff.”
“The time felt right for us to publish Ireland’s first Secure Connectivity and SD-WAN Report.” Damien continues. “The pandemic moved the needle on technology and business comms. Business leaders now rightfully recognise technology as a linchpin of their organisation. Enterprises are building for resilience. Whatever the world has up its sleeve next, they plan to be ready and technology is the main tool in their arsenal. Businesses are committed to investing in their IT infrastructure in 2023 and beyond. It is crucial that they identify the technology that gives them the kind of robust flexibility they are looking for. Our team has valuable insights gained over the last five years and we wanted to share them with the wider market.”
