When Viatel started knocking on the doors of Irish businesses with their SD-WAN offering five years ago, they met a lot of blank stares. “We heard more than a few ‘SD-Wha’s?’ in those early days,” laughs Eilish O’Connor, Chief Technical Officer (CTO) with the group. SD-WAN or software-defined wide area network is a type of virtual network architecture that employs software to manage the network communication. Its popularity derives, in part, from the fact that its deign is far better suited to how businesses now use the internet. Eilish explains “With companies running their workloads to the cloud, traditional network configuration causes performance issues and terrible user experience. SD-WAN is a cost-effective way to transform traffic capacity among many other advantages.”
