Senior Business Development Manager with Viatel’s Enterprise Team, Nicola Connaughton, recently sat down with Keith O’Connor, IT Director with Cpl, to discuss our ongoing partnership.

Chapter 1: Introducing Cpl and Keith

Keith has a long history with Cpl, joining the company when it had just 200 staff in two offices.

Chapter 2: SD-WAN

Cpl’s mission is to find the best candidates for their clients and to find the best jobs for their candidates. A fast, secure, reliable network with always-on access to databases, job boards and specialist software is essential to their everyday operations. Cpl initially engaged Viatel having gone to market for a provider to migrate their traditional MPLS network to SD-WAN.

Highlights

• Deployment: The rollout project encompassed 32 sites located across seven countries (Ireland, United Kingdom, Germany, Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary). Viatel’s technical team delivered a seamless roll out despite the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic. Regular updates and weekly meetings with the appointed project manager were crucial for Cpl’s peace of mind.
• Visibility is one of the greatest benefits of SD-WAN for Cpl. The single-pane-of-glass that the Meraki stack provides delivers insights into status and traffic across the entire network. The visibility saves time and resources for a busy IT Department.

Chapter 3: Cloud

More recently, with aging hardware soaking up valuable IT resources, Cpl opted to migrate their physical server environment to Viatel’s private cloud.

Highlights

• Efficiencies: the cost and time savings on offer were a big incentive for Cpl to migrate to a cloud environment. Day-to-day management is handed over to the experts in Viatel and Keith’s team are freed up to work on more strategic projects.
• Cost control: protection from bill shock was key to Cpl’s decision to opt for Viatel’s private cloud over a public service like AWS (Amazon Web Services) or Azure. A contract with set pricing and agreed boundaries prevents any unpleasant surprises.
• Responsive Support was the second decisive factor in opting for Viatel’s FLEXI cloud. A stable service means Cpl rarely need to call on Viatel but they trust that we are there when they need us. Cpl value the ability to pick up the phone at any hour of day (or night!) if they require assistance.

Chapter 4: Shared Values

The commitment to giving back to our communities is something that Cpl and Viatel have in common. Cpl is well known for their community initiatives. It is one of the reasons they have ranked as one of Ireland’s Best Large Places to Work for seven years in a row. Keith told us about the projects that he, and the company, dedicate their time to.

Chapter 5: Looking to the Future

Impressed with Cisco technology, Cpl has adopted more of the stack including managed switching, wireless LAN and smart cameras. Viatel is now a trusted partner and Cpl has huge growth plans including expansion in the UK and breaking into the US market.

Highlights

• Scalability: Cpl has massive growth ambitions. Keith’s focus has been on cultivating key partners like Viatel to give Cpl the flexibility they need to scale their technology to support expansion.
• Secure hybrid working: Hybrid working is here to stay for the Cpl team. Rethinking security in this context is vital. Keith and his team are working with Viatel to extend the office security barrier from the firewall out to the end-user at home.
