Major network upgrade announced by Viatel Technology Group

Viatel Technology Group has announced a significant enhancement to its network. Viatel is a leading provider of cloud, cybersecurity, communications and digital transformation solutions. This latest technology upgrade will future proof key infrastructure to keep pace with continuous expansion and the growing demands of its customer base.

Viatel Technology Group is set to enable 100G connectivity in Cork, Portlaoise, Drogheda and Dundalk in phase one of the major upgrade. More cities and towns will follow in later phases. Three diverse 100G paths into the UK, from Dublin and Cork, support the group's growing international interests. Amsterdam is poised for 100G enablement in the next phase of works.

This substantial technological advancement places Viatel alongside top-tier multinational operators, showcasing the company's commitment to delivering world-class services as an indigenous Irish business. This upgrade represents an impressive fivefold increase in capacity on select routes. It bolsters the connection between Viatel's three Dublin data centres and provides enhanced connectivity into AWS and Azure for the group's public cloud customers.

The upgrade is being delivered under the guidance of Head of Networks, Sergiusz Paprzycki. “Ensuring diversity and resilience within the network is a paramount focus of this project," Sergiusz explains. "By partnering with a select number of global operators, we are reinforcing our robust foundations. The thousands of customers who rely on us for security, cloud and communications can now enjoy even greater peace of mind. These works are being completed without any disruption to our current customers’ services.

Advancing the technology in our network core also presented us with the opportunity to optimise our power footprint. We were able to make more energy efficient choices to support our commitment to sustainable practices and to delivering cost effective solutions.

Damien McCann is Chief Commercial Officer with Viatel Technology Group. He notes that “The solutions we offer to customers on the Viatel network have transformed. We manage security portfolios, guide cloud migration to public, private and hybrid environments, maintain a three data centre estate and empower organisations with secure AI tools. This technology upgrade ensures improved performance and reliability in the heart of our infrastructure.”

There are many benefits for current and potential customers. “As we continue to grow, we want to maintain the agility that has been our hallmark. Having this advanced technology in place, ready to deploy, we preserve the quick turnaround times that our customers value. For our multinational customers, the international links reaffirm Ireland as the ideal base for their operations. We are proud to partner with innovative organisations. With these network developments, we have the capacity to match their greatest ambitions. Our customers’ success is our success; together the possibilities are limitless.”

Viatel Technology Group is expanding its industry-leading capabilities in cloud solutions, cybersecurity, connectivity and digital transformation. The company's recent acquisition of Sungard Availability Services' Irish cloud business marks its eighth successful acquisition since 2020. Viatel's dedication to excellence was recently recognised when it was named ICT Company of the Year at the Chamber Ireland InBUSINESS Awards.
