Viatel Deliver 1Gb highspeed broadband to Rockall
Dublin, Ireland | 11th June 2019
Leading Irish technology business Viatel have today announced plans to rollout highspeed gigabit broadband to the entire Islet of Rockall which is located 370km off the North West coast of Ireland.
The build will see Viatel deliver 1Gb dedicated wireless service to the island with a fully meshed WIFI service across the 55-meter surface area of the Islet by 2023.
Commenting on the network expansion, from the warmth of the Viatel Dublin HQ, Damien McCann Director of Sales and Marketing at Viatel Ireland, said “While studying the National Broadband Plan, we were stunned to learn that connecting Rockall is not part of the Government Plan. We just could not sit idly by as we understand that connecting Islands are very much in vogue so we jumped at the opportunity to make Rockall the fastest connected Islet in the world”
In recent months telecoms companies have been racing to provide ultra highspeed connectivity to islands, with recent announcements for both Innismeain and Arranmore. “The VC funding is in place, the contracts are ready to go and the engineers are working hard to get a plan together. People used to say “there is feckall on Rockall” – well they won’t be saying that anymore, or at least they won’t be saying that after 2023” continued McCann.
No human inhabitants from Rockall were available for comment on the announcement. No puffins were troubled by this announcement either.
“Perched on the edge of Ireland and home to 0 people, Rockall’s story reveals a powerful urge to connect nature.”
