Viatel and IEE Join Forces – 18th May 2004

LONDON, 18th May 2004 - Viatel and IEE join forces

Installing a network to meet the needs of The IEE (Institution of Electrical Engineers) was never going to be an easy task, as Europe's largest professional engineering organisation The IEE is also the official body setting standards of qualifications for professional electrical, electronics, software, systems and manufacturing engineers. However Viatel earned top marks with the installation of a virtual private network (VPN) that now links the IEE's offices in Stevenage, Birmingham, London and Glasgow.

Viatel managed the transition of the IEE's Stevenage headquarters internet connection, which hosts their international web server, over to a Viatel high capacity leased line. A four site virtual private network (VPN) linked by cost effective DSL lines has also been installed to provide internal communications for the IEE's regional offices.

"It is vitally important that the IEE continues to offer seamless service across all our offices," said IEE IT Technical Architect Alan Gray.

"Viatel's VPN and connectivity options provide me with a scalable resource to quickly connect new offices and users whilst maintaining the quality of our core services." Gray continued. "It's reassuring to know Viatel's European presence will enable us to extend our services as we continue to grow as an international organisation."

"We're delighted that our services are already delivering real business benefit to the IEE" remarked Lucy Woods, CEO of Viatel. "This win is testament to the skill and dedication of our team who worked hard to provide the right VPN and connectivity service for the IEE's business."

The VPN is monitored by Viatel technicians who work closely with The IEE's IT team to maintain a robust connection. Initial applications for the network include shared databases, centralised servers and synchronised diaries. Viatel offers highly redundant network connections extending into Europe from its Egham headquarters ensuring total resilience of service to better serve international needs.

Viatel operates across six European markets, including the UK, France and Germany. It helps businesses of all sizes to securely connect their people and places, manage their web applications and increase the security of their data.
