Viatel is delighted to be part of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) Awareness Coalition. The GDPR Awareness Coalition is a not-for-profit, fixed-term initiative to assist in raising awareness of the data privacy obligations for companies from the global multinational to single employee traders, as a result of the implementation of GDPR on the near horizon. Gary Connolly the President and Founder of Host in Ireland has assembled an expanding list of more than 80 engaged Coalition Partners that include GDPR experts, vendors, and legal, fiscal, event and general collaborators, and business associations.
The GDPR is a European Union (EU) directive which comes into force in May 2018. It is the latest development in the current EU initiative to safeguard it’s citizens and their private information. The GDPR sets out the principles defining how the personal data of your staff, clients and suppliers are handled with regards to the rights of the individual. The GDPR is a legal framework that sets guidelines for the collection and processing of personal information of individuals within the EU.
With the data protection legalities developing rapidly it presents many challenges for businesses, government and public authorities, in particular for consumer-facing businesses, online businesses and those in the financial services sector or organisations in possession of sensitive personal data. In the event of a data breach under the GDPR directive, fines of up to €20 million or 4% of a company’s annual turnover could be enforced. Businesses will have to move quickly to avoid potentially large fines for non-compliance.
The GDPR directive will apply to businesses outside the EU who offer goods or services or monitor data within the EU. It also applies whether or not the data processing takes place outside the EU. If your business is transferring data outside the EU, it must do so under appropriate procedures. Your business should review how your business is transferring it’s data and ensure the correct mechanisms are in place.
Viatel is a Gold Standard Deloitte Best Managed Company, which houses thousands of enterprise clients’ data in our secure, state-of-the-art facility. Viatel’s high-capacity fibre connections feeding into the data centre connects to our international network which is popped in all the major data centres and Tier 1 carrier locations across Europe.
Commenting on the coalition, Viatel director of sales and marketing, Damien McCann said, “We are delighted to be a part of the GDPR coalition as Ireland is becoming the data hosting capital of Europe. As a leading colocation solutions provider in Ireland, Viatel is taking an active role in raising awareness of the GDPR data privacy obligations for Irish companies. We believe this is important especially as Ireland ranks below-average in awareness of the GDPR in comparison to other EU countries”.
President and Founder of Host in Ireland, Gary Connolly commented:
“We established the GDPR Awareness Coalition to raise awareness within Ireland that businesses must comply with the GDPR EU initiative which comes into effect May 2018. It will not be “business as usual” for entities collecting and processing of personal information of individuals within the European Union as businesses will face severe fines for data breaches and non-compliance. The coalition is delighted to have Viatel on board alongside the other 81 companies in assisting in our awareness objectives to organisations of all size and industries within the 26 counties. With Viatel also becoming a GDPR Awareness Coalition Ambassador, it will allow Viatel to assist in the creation, distribution and strategy of our collateral which is all built under the #SimpleGDPR umbrella”.
